Affiliate Marketing Basics – Get Yourself In Front Of Your Audience

The first step towards establishing yourself as a trusted expert in your niche is to find your target audience and get in front of them. Once you’ve done that, you can start to funnel some of that traffic back to your own site to build your list, attract an audience of loyal readers and of course sell them related affiliate products to monetize your site. It all starts with your audience.

Who Is Your Target Audience

Your first step is to determine who exactly your target audience is. Be as specific as possible. What’s their gender, age, family status etc? What else interests and moves them. I find it helps to imagine one specific person that personifies my ideal target market. I give him (or her) a name and fill out an entire biography about them. As I write articles, blog posts and email messages, I write them directly to this imaginary person.

Where Can You Find Them Online

Once you know who you are targeting, find out where they are already hanging out online. Are there particular forums they participate in? What about Facebook groups? Maybe there are some twitter hash tags this group of people uses. I also find it helpful to find a few popular blogs. Start participating on those sites, use the same hash tags and leave comments on those blogs. In other words find out where your audience is, and then start getting in front of them.

Leveraging Other People’s Online Properties

I already hinted at this, but the general idea here is that you can leverage the online properties others have built. If there’s a popular forum or blog, use it to interact with your target market. Other ways to do this is via guest blog posts, article marketing and even video and podcasts. Find other website owners in a similar related niche and start working with them.

Funneling Them Back To Your Site and List

The end goal is of course to funnel some of this highly targeted traffic back to your own site. You can do this via a forum signature and by filling out the website field on blog comments. If you are invited to participate in a podcast or a webinar, be sure to mention your website ad invite readers to visit it for more information. You can also mention a special bonus or free report they can sign up for if they join your list or sign up for your newsletter. In other words, go out there and market yourself and your website.
